Scripture Reading: Acts 2:1-8, 11b-12
Pentecost is probably one of the most mysterious celebrations in the Christian year. We can easily relate to Christmas, when a child is born, or to Easter, with its message of eternal life. But Pentecost speaks of tongues of fire and people speaking in different languages—events that can feel distant from our everyday experience.
Yet Pentecost is filled with miracles, and they all begin with one important word: change.
Before Pentecost, the disciples were afraid and uncertain. After Jesus returned to heaven, they stayed behind locked doors, unsure of what the future would bring. Then, on the day of Pentecost, everything changed. They stepped out into the crowded streets of Jerusalem with a courage they had never known before.
That courage led Peter, a simple fisherman, to preach with remarkable boldness and wisdom. His words touched thousands of hearts. Those who heard the message carried it home with them, sharing the good news of Jesus wherever they went. Soon Christian congregations began appearing throughout the known world.
But the greatest miracle was not the growth of the church. It was the transformation of people’s lives. Those who believed began to live differently. They cared for one another, shared what they had, strengthened families, and helped those in need. A community marked by love and generosity was born.
What made such a change possible? The answer is simple: the Holy Spirit. Jesus had promised,
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.”
At Pentecost, that promise was fulfilled.
How did it happen? The people listened to Peter’s message about Jesus’ death and resurrection. They came to understand that God loved them, forgave them, and offered them a new beginning. As they believed that message, the Holy Spirit began to work in their hearts. They saw not only the faults of others, but also their own need for God’s grace. They discovered that Christ wanted to make them new.
The good news is that this is not only a story from long ago. The same Holy Spirit still works today.
A pastor once visited an elderly woman who had been told she did not have much time left to live. Looking back on her life, she said,
“Everything Jesus taught about the Holy Spirit is true. The Holy Spirit guided me when I was raising my children alone. He gave me courage in difficult times. He helped me understand God’s Word and comforted me through every struggle.”
She spoke peacefully about going home to her Savior, yet added, “As long as God keeps me here, I will continue encouraging the other patients.”
When the pastor returned a few days later, her bed was empty. One of the nurses said, “I am not a believer, but that woman made me think. She brought something from heaven among us.”
That is what the Holy Spirit does. He changes hearts, and changed hearts change lives. The miracle that began at Pentecost continues wherever people open their hearts to Christ. Through His Spirit, God still fills ordinary people with courage, hope, love, and peace—and through them, He brings a little bit of heaven into this world. Amen
