Gospel of Luke 19:1-10
The story of Zacchaeus is one many of us first heard as children. But the older we get, the more we realize how deeply it speaks to real life. It’s the story of someone who looked successful on the outside, yet felt empty and restless inside—and how one encounter with Jesus changed everything.
Zacchaeus had money, influence, and position. As a chief tax collector, he had climbed high. But along the way, he lost something far more important: real relationships, acceptance, and peace. He was rejected by others and likely carried old wounds and disappointments. His success could not heal his loneliness or quiet his heart.
Something inside him kept pushing him forward. He didn’t even fully understand it himself. He just wanted to see Jesus. Not to follow Him, not to change his life—just to see Him. So he ran ahead, climbed a tree, and didn’t care what people thought.
And then something unexpected happened. Jesus stopped. He looked up. He called Zacchaeus by name. Instead of judgment, Jesus offered closeness: “Today I must stay at your house.” Grace met Zacchaeus right where he was.
That moment changed him. Zacchaeus welcomed Jesus with joy, and his heart began to shift. Without being told what to do, he wanted to make things right. Love did what rules never could. When Jesus entered his life, Zacchaeus could no longer remain the same.
This is what happens when Jesus truly meets someone. Where He is welcomed, change begins. The hold of money, power, and old wounds loosens, and something new is born—peace, freedom, and the ability to love again.
Zacchaeus’s story is our story too. We all carry our own longings—to be seen, accepted, valued, and loved. And the good news is this: when God comes looking for us, He doesn’t pass us by. He meets us where we are, lifts us out of our burdens, and restores our relationship with Him, with others, and even with ourselves.
Let us be open to that encounter—and to the new life it brings!
